This is for keen hikers only. The trail is about 9 km. (5.6 miles) one way and involves 1290 mts (4,230 feet) of descent from the summit of Cerro Buena Vista (Costa Rica's second highest mountain) to the hotel at 2200 mts. (7,210 feet) above sea level. Hikers are driven to the summit and on the way can enjoy the impressive panoramic views, which if clear, include both coasts and even erupting volcanoes. The trail starts in sub-Alpine vegetation, known as páramo, typically, dwarf plant species that visually create a rather pre-historic setting. This transitions into other forest zones and the trees become taller with a greater diversity and density of plant species as you descend towards the tropical oak forest. This hike requires a guide and includes a packed lunch to recharge your batteries along the way. Hotel Savegre's private nature reserve is a proud member of the Costa Rican Network of Nature Reserves.
