The five trails

Times are approximate and depend on your own pace. The table is meant for choosing before you set out, not for finding out halfway.

Which one to choose

Los Pioneros is the shortest and the only one suitable for visitors with reduced mobility; even so, it is best to check with us depending on your situation. It is also the easiest first walk on arrival, while your body is still adjusting to 2,200 metres.

Canto de las Aves and La Quebrada are the middle ground: under an hour, with enough climb to feel it and no preparation required. La Quebrada can be wet, so footwear matters.

Camino 4x4 is wide and firm. Being a road rather than a path, you can walk side by side and talk — it works best for a group.

Los Robles is a different proposition: 6.2 kilometres of natural, uneven ground climbing to about 2,600 metres. Two to three hours. It asks for fitness and proper hiking boots.

What you see along the way

The mature oak forest is quetzal habitat, and the trails run right through it. Nothing needs booking to go in: you can walk out at dawn and come back for breakfast.

The variety of habitats within a short distance — closed forest, forest edge, gardens and the bank of the Savegre river — is what makes a single morning add up. A guide raises your odds considerably, because they know which trees are fruiting this week, but the trails are freely open to anyone staying at the hotel.

What to bring

Closed shoes with good grip; for Los Robles, proper hiking boots. Layers: at 2,200 metres the morning is cold and midday is mild. A waterproof jacket, because the cloud forest lives up to its name. Water. And binoculars if you have them — the hotel also rents them.

How to finish

A drink by the fire at Los Robles bar, or a massage at Del Río Spa. After Los Robles, the second one is not a luxury: it is maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be fit?

It depends on the trail. Four of the five take under an hour and ask for no preparation. Los Robles does: 6.2 kilometres of uneven ground up to about 2,600 metres, two to three hours.

Is any trail accessible?

Los Pioneros, 400 metres with gentle slopes, is the only one suitable for visitors with reduced mobility. Write to us beforehand and we will confirm for your situation.

Can I walk without a guide?

Yes. The trails are open from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and entry is included for hotel guests. A guide is optional and greatly improves your chances of seeing wildlife.

Are quetzals seen on the trails?

It is possible: they run through mature oak forest, which is quetzal habitat. To look for one on purpose, the guided 5:15 a.m. outing has far better odds.
